thelibster: listen

This is a list of some of the audio files that are scattered around the site. I've just refurbished it so it will take awhile for me to enter all of the files. (It's a complete disaster - they are everywhere).

File: 1 TOG plays Soul Vaccination (but not as well as Tower of Power)
Chart:
Info:Hey look what I found - an mp3 of me and TOG playing "Soul Vaccination" at The Basement in Sydney a couple of years ago. It's not necessarily pretty but was awesome fun. You can't half tell that the female singer didn't know any of the songs. Tsk Tsk. Oh well. I remember that night pretty well, cause believe it or not Bette Midler came to the gig. Her band was there all night and they went and got her to come for the second half. We were asked to play at her end of tour party, but it didn't work out. I probably asked for too much money or something.

File: Billie's Bounce - Lib Style
Chart:
Info:A (poor quality) recording of me messing around to Charlie Parker's 'Billie's Bounce' - a blues in F. I just found it floating around in one of the old Libster site folders.

File: Farther Down The Track
Chart:
Info:OMG I can't believe I just found this. I'd forgotten about it completely. It's got very atypical bass playing for me. I'm shocked. I just don't play like this. I must have been going through a bit of a schizo phase. It's so 80s.

Anyway, it's an original song by my long time band "Temple of Groove" that's got heaps of slapping in it. I just don't do that very often :-). It doesn't sound like TOG either. It's got this slappy, busy 3/4 feel happening. I reckon the chords in the bridge are nice. It sounds like a throwback to early 80s british funk. Talk about nostalgic!

File: Fly Rudotch
Chart: rudotch.php
Info:This is one of a few little pieces I once wrote for then students of mine who had to do school exams - it's hard to come across self-contained pieces for bass, (especially ones that are playable by people who aren't pyrotechnical wizards).

File: Get Your Fix - Lib bass solo
Chart:
Info:I'm getting quite nostaligic going through the old Libster folders. I found this file of me doing a wacky solo in a song called "Get Your Fix". This track's a rarity cause I played the guitar tracks as well - the guitarist was out at dinner, and frankly wasn't cutting it :-) Life can be cruel sometimes.

File: Handslap Grooves 1-8
Chart: slaphandslapgr.php
Info:These are recordings of the basslines that are included in the Handslap Grooves lesson. (Handslaps are a percussive left-hand technique). Sorry about the recording quality - it was back in the day when I had no gear.

File: Hold
Chart: http://www.thelibster.com/bass/basslines/basslinefiles/Hold-bass-original.pdf
Info:This is a little reggae number I did with Angus Stone, who's since become a rapidly rising star in the UK along with his big sis. He is breathtakingly hot, although I think his recent facial hair look has to go.

It was done very quickly but I think it came out OK. I played bass & produced it. I have a feeling that I pretty much played my own thing on that one, so the chart mightn't be very accurate.. I usually just play whatever I feel like at the time when I'm the bass player, but if I write a part for someone else, I turn into a precious cow ;-)

Davey Hatch played drums, Bill Risby played the cool Wurly and Dave Longo played guit, along with Angus.

File: Stretch
Chart: stretch.php
Info:This is a (poor quality again) recording of a finger stretching exercises - is a really good warm up exercise (even if I do say so myself)!

File: Teamwork
Chart:
Info:This one has a kind of unusual busy slap bass thing. It is a very cruddy quality quality snippet of a .wav file sorry. If I ever had a CD of this song, it's long since vanished. It's from a band I was in years ago called Muthabeat. The track sounds very 80s, but it couldn't have been done then cause I would have been too young. Maybe mid-90s.

All I can remember about that band was that the singer/drummer did a runner in the middle of the night and moved to Thailand, cause I think he owed a lot of people a lot of money. He once left a message on my answering machine that he was coming back to Aus and that I should hurry up and get the band back together. I never heard from him again. These days he's probably on death row in a Bangkok prison for drug trafficking. I'm not kidding.
